The Breaker Hill Wind Farm proposal is for fifteen 1.3MW wind turbines (19.5MW), with a 68m tower height and 31m blades (99m tip height), along with underground cables, access tracks, anemometer masts, a switchgear building and a temporary construction compound. They would be built on Breaker Hill, currently forest, and Craig Hill, part of Poundland Farm.

About 270 hectares of commercial conifer plantation would be felled to accommodate the wind farm. Access roads would be built up the hill from Almont Farm

Construction access for the turbines would be from Ballantrae along the B734 through Colmonell and into the forest at Almont Farm.

The Planning Application has been submitted by the developers to South Ayrshire Council, who are in the process of assessing all the reports. A Planning Hearing is expected about January 2011.

The aim of AWAG is as follows:

• To stop the windfarm development on Almont/Breaker Hill & Craig Hill, Poundland, near Pinwherry in the Stinchar Valley - South Ayrshire.
• If necessary, to force the developer to minimise the effects of their turbines and the access roads.
• To prevent the addition of further unsuitably sited turbines in this area.
• To highlight to others the realities of living with turbines and expose the myth of them being "eco-friendly".
• To co-ordinate with other action groups to help prevent the construction of wind turbines in other unsuitable sites.

Official Objection

Objections to the wind farm are still valuable, and will be accepted up until a date for the Planning Hearing is set by South Ayrshire Council. This is currently expected to be about June 2010.

Windfarm Action Group seeks support

I am a strong supporter of renewable energy and have supported a number of windfarm developments where they were sensible, and had the backing of local people. I also campaigned hard alongside my colleague Sarah Boyack MSP for micro renewable to feature in the Scottish Government’s plans. But I also believe that we need a balanced approach to our energy mix, and that the load should be spread across Scotland. That’s why, when I was in Government, I fought hard for ‘cumulative impact’ to be something which could be considered in planning applications for windfarms. In other words, in considering an application, it would be permissible to look not just at what is proposed in that particular application, but also to take account of a wider look at the local area. I was persuaded of the need for this because of the volume of windfarm applications in my constituency. At one stage there were so many plans being proposed for Carrick, that they were in danger of all joining up if every one got the go ahead! I met with representatives of the Action Group who are worried about the impact on the Stinchar valley if the proposed windfarm at Almont/Breaker Hill goes ahead. This plan does not appear to have any community support, and I hope that South Ayrshire Council will consider the cumulative impact of yet another windfarm in Carrick, when they consider the application.
